24 things I learned for the millionth time in 2024


Dear Reader,

We seem to re-learn the same lessons every year. Don’t overschedule yourself the day you return from vacation.

This year, instead of coming up with New Year’s resolutions, I thought it might be handy to lean on lessons we’ve already learned.

Oh, there are so many lessons to choose from! I discuss my top four in depth in the Wise Effort podcast. Enjoy a listen.

But here’s my complete list of 24 for 2024.

The 24 things I learned for the millionth time in 2024

  1. Every moment is a choice point.
  2. You need to let it be bad for it to get great.
  3. You are enough.
  4. It can be effortful and joyful at the same time.
  5. You can never have enough lemons.
  6. When you are stuck, do something different, anything different.
  7. Beliefs don’t matter as much as actions.
  8. Whatever is unpleasant will change.
  9. Whatever is pleasant will change.
  10. People don’t really care what you do for a living; they care how you treat them.
  11. You are the source of most of your suffering.
  12. Going for a walk outside cures a lot.
  13. Everything you love, you will lose.
  14. You can’t get anywhere worthwhile without the help of others.
  15. If you are making it worse, stop.
  16. Relationships need regular feeding.
  17. There are no bad parts.
  18. Don’t let your expectations ruin it for you.
  19. Share your gifts with others; you are needed.
  20. The process is the reward.
  21. Don’t expect others to reinforce your new habit.
  22. Let yourself be moved.
  23. Energy is everything; take care of it.
  24. You are already wise.
